The Baltimore Orioles came into Miami for the second of three games in this Interleague series hoping to win a series over the Marlins for the first time since 2000. Unfortunately after 13 innings of failing to score they could not prevent the Marlins from doing so as they fall 1-0 and force a rubber game. Miami now snaps its eight game losing streak and once General Manager Dan Jennings wins his first ballgame as the Marlins acting manager.
O’s rookie starter Mike Wright, who was coming off a masterful outing, last Sunday in his Major League debut, had another one tonight despite earning a no decision, Wright pitched seven innings only giving up three hits and three walks and did not surrender any runs again tonight. He also had a base hit in the sixth inning which led to Travis Snider being tagged out at home trying to score. O’s pitcher Oliver Drake, making his Major League debut tonight out of the bullpen pitched three scoreless innings striking out two and only giving up two hits. Reliever Brian Matusz came into the game in the 12th innings only to be ejected later in the inning for having a foreign substance on his right forearm. T.J. McFarland would earn the loss for Baltimore when he gave up a walk-off RBI to Martin Prado in the 13th inning.
After coming off a season high eight inning pitching performance in his previous start Marlins starter Dan Haren lasted six innings in a no decision giving up seven hits and three walks but still did not allow a run and struck out six batters. The Marlins bullpen shutdown Oriole batters from the 7th to the 10th inning and then from the 10th to the 13th inning. The bullpen totaled nine strikeouts on the night; six were from Carter Capps who earned the win for Miami. Some bright spots for Baltimore’s offense consisted of third baseman Manny Machado and left fielder Travis Snider each accounting for a single and a double each. Jimmy Paredes also recorded a multi-hit game tonight and has now reached base in all 20 games in May this season. Chris Davis earned himself the “Golden Sombrero” for striking out four times in the game tonight.
The O’s will try to win this series with the Marlins tomorrow afternoon. Game time will be 1:10 PM/ET. Probable starters will be Miguel Gonzalez (BAL 5-2 3.24 ERA) vs. Tom Koehler (MIA 2-3 3.70 ERA).
